When I went to Ford, their take on me was, “You don’t have any robotics experience, you don’t have any automotive experience, but you do seem pretty excited about this area and you’ve done a lot of work on your own.” They offered me a short-term contract that was about half the rate I was getting offered elsewhere. I took the job and pretty quickly I got experience and started making more money.
But if I’d never taken that first offer, I’d still be working in web and mobile software right now.
Obviously that won’t be everyone’s experience, and we hope the Udacity Nanodegree Program offers a smoother transition for most of our students. But I still think it’s a good idea to default to yes when entering a new field.
Hope that helps!
